24th January Personalised CPD

Yesterday was a really interesting day as far as my personal CPD was concerned. I had noticed some time ago that the Flat Classroom Conference – Leadership Workshop and Student Summit was to take place on January 24-26, 2009 at the Qatar Academy, Doha, State of Qatar, with the strap line ‘Ideation Nation: Citizenship in the Global E-Learning Economy’ so I thought I would drop in and see/listen/read what was happening. Exciting times. Even better I discovered that Thomas Friedman, author of ‘The World is Flat’ was to speak to the conference by audio link from his home in Washington DC. The link, via Elluminate, was not at its best but the back channel and the chat was good enough for me to get the drift of the ideas coming out. Key ideas for me were ( there was so much more):

  • Act now … don’t wait
  • Everything that you do today is leaving an digital footprint
  • Where you live matters for some things but not for others
  • Over correctness can be detrimental
  • Distance should not intimidate
  • In ten years time will it look just the same but faster?

From there I noticed on Twitter that Mark Pentleton, Director and Creator of the Radio Lingua Network,producer of some of the world’s most popular language programmes, had uploaded the 2nd episode of ‘Walk, Talk and Learn French’ and checking, I could see it in my Itune downloads … I learned a bit of French … the difference between ‘des… que’ and ‘aussitot … que’ as well as how ‘ne …. plus’ works. (Can’t find how to do accents in WordPress!)

Then picking up on a post of Friday I began to get into The ‘2009 Horizon Report’ (online). The exec summary indicates that this is a serious document for serious reading …

The annual Horizon Report describes the continuing work of the New Media Consortium (NMC)’s Horizon Project, a long-running qualitative research project that seeks to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, research, or creative expression within learning-focused organizations. The 2009 Horizon Report is the sixth annual report in the series. The report is produced again in 2009 as a collaboration between the New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), an EDUCAUSE program.

The Key Trends show indicators which should concern all educators and everyone involved in making education better:

  • Increasing globalization continues to affect the way we work, collaborate, and communicate.
  • The notion of collective intelligence is redefining how we think about ambiguity and imprecision.
  • The notion of collective intelligence is redefining how we think about ambiguity and imprecision.
  • Visualization tools are making information more meaningful and insights more intuitive.
  • As more than one billion phones are produced each year, mobile phones are benefiting from unprecedented innovation, driven by global competition.

Personal capability then came  to the fore as I again worked on explanations and teaching strategies for a piece of software called ‘Fuse Creator’ . This is an application I will be showing to a group of Cornish teachers at the end of next week and I needed to get to grips with the pedagogical implications that will surround its use in classroom contexts (rather than what the buttons do).

While sitting working on this ( with TweetDeck open so that I was in touch with the world) I noticed a tweet from Will Richardson  . He was in Philadelphia where he was at Educon21 ( EduCon 2.1 is both a conversation and a conference. And it is not a technology conference. It is an education conference. It is, hopefully, an innovation conference where we can come together, both in person and virtually, to discuss the future of schools. Every session will be an opportunity to discuss and debate ideas — from the very practical to the big dreams.) He was just about to begin a session with some teachers related to ‘In the 21C, as far as schools are concerned, what will learning look like, what is worth keeping and what shall we throw out?’

What needs to stay?

Good Teaching Pedagogy
Relational aspect of school, students to students, relationship with content
Some type of assessment that learning is occurring.
Permission to be creative.
Technology to support learning
Collaboration and Teamwork
Physical space (age dependent?)
Diversity
Real world authentic learning experiences
Teachers, parental involvement
Focus on literacy in all forms
What needs to go?

Current artifical time structures for learning
Teacher lecturer, font of knowledge
Belief that college is the only path
Disconnect between what we buy and what is used
Textbooks
AP Course structure
ARtificial segmentation of knowledge
Emphasis on standardized testing

What will replace it?

Redefinition of post secondary education

So really a day of CPD not constrained by geography or time and widely varying that will all add to my knowledge. Nor did my ‘carbon footprint’ hit the planet ( except for the boiling of kettles)

  1. Doug, I’m glad to have played a small part in your CPD. This is what it’s all about and we need to try to find ways to ensure that every teacher in the country can access this kind of ‘personalised CPD’. Perhaps the challenge is more in getting every teacher in the country to want to access it.
