Exciting times

Friend Tricia alerts me to an exciting innovation from the  π Raspberry Pi Foundation’ … a computer the size of a USB Key !!

The BBC have a feature on it here.

This is what they say about it:

Our first product is about the size of a USB key, and is designed to plug into a TV or be combined with a touch screen for a low cost tablet. The expected price is $25 for a fully-configured system.

Provisional specification:

  • 700MHz ARM11
  • 128MB of SDRAM
  • OpenGL ES 2.0
  • 1080p30 H.264 high-profile decode
  • Composite and HDMI video output
  • USB 2.0
  • SD/MMC/SDIO memory card slot
  • General-purpose I/O
  • Open software (Ubuntu, Iceweasel, KOffice, Python)
Can’t wait to try this out … takes me back to a childhood of building crystal set radios inside match boxes!! The skeptics will, of course, say that you could do the same with all of those old laptops etc etc lying around in piles but this just looks exciting to me … surely worth a try.

  1. I can see you have the urge to tinker Doug! Go for it. My OH has a large collection of free PC’s from our IT services (ex-desktops) which run ubuntu really well, put to all sorts of uses in the lab and elsewhere. Kids could have a great time exploring Open Source stuff with these.
